Becoming a Contractor

The State of Alaska regulates construction contractors.  Please visit their website to learn more about becoming a new contractor and requirements for maintaining and keeping your contractors license current.  Please contact ABSN  to take your Cold Climate Home Building Course requirement as well as your required 16 hours of Continuing Education (CEU's) every two years for your license renewal.

Cold Climate Home Building Course Information: This two-day workshop is for contractors wishing to secure their contractor license residential endorsment as well as for owner builders and others interested in resdential construction. This course supplies the fundamental building science education necessary to enable contractors to understand the details of successful energy efficient buildings. Each workshop is tailored to consider local climate demands in the application of appropriate construction techniques. Students will learn how construction practices suitable for Ketchikan may not be best in Nome or Barrow. Current efficient construction news and research items are presented at the end of each workshop (16 CEUs). ABSN provides this workshop on a regular basis, please see the calendar on our website or contact us for a class near you.

Residential Endorsement Exam Information: All individuals who want to apply for the residential endorsement examination must apply directly through Prometric (testing agency) at http://www.prometric.com/Alaska/Construction.htm or call the Prometric Call Center at (800) 280-3926.

After Passing the Residential Endorsement Examination: The following items are required before the residential endorsement can be issued:

1. Residential endorsement application and fee of $50.00.

2. Proof of completion of the the 16 hour Cold Climate Home Building Workshop (or equivalent) ABSN provides this workshop on a regular basis, please contact us for a class near you.

3. Payment of the residential endorsement fee of $200.00.

4. Assignment of the residential endorsement to a general contractor license.
