What is a home Energy Rating or home Energy Audit?
An energy rating is typically done for a newly constructed home. If you're buying a new car, you might look at the EPA's rating estimating how many miles the car will run per gallon of gas. A new refrigerator will tell you how many dollars you'll save per month by using an energy efficient model. Think of a home energy rating the same way: it measures how well a home uses energy to heat (and cool) the house. The rating can estimate what your expenses will be for heating (and cooling).
An energy audit is typically done on an existing home or commercial building. It will report how efficiently (or ineffeciantly) the home uses energy. It will also give suggestions on ways to improve your homes energy efficiency.
